Hello guys!! It has been a minute since I last posted. College life has been pretty busy especially with all the performances I have done recently. When you perform you want to look your absolute best whether it be in an ensemble or by yourself. Your appearance is everything. If you come onstage looking like who did it and why then your audience is already turned off. I’m gonna share with you guys some of my past performance looks to show you how to best present yourself in front of a crowd.

Detroit Jazz Festival Youth Vocal Competition 2016

This shot is from when I competed for a spot to sing at the Detroit Jazz Festival and $1,000 scholarship. I knew I had to make a good impression on the audience and the judges to try and win their favor so I pulled out my best pieces. Tan suit+summertime=excellent combo. The color will keep you cool while looking cool as well. You can also never go wrong with a black shirt because black goes well with anything. And of course I had to throw in a dash of red to brighten things up

Detroit Jazz Festival 2016

I did go on to actually win the competition and the prize money 😜So I had to up my style game even more. I knew I could be more relaxed at the Jazz Fest because of the atmosphere of the crowd. Knowing your audience is an important aspect of being a performer. You have to get a feel for the demographics so you’ll know what to sing, what to wear, how to act, etc. For all the jazzy folks in the audience I pulled out my linen floral blazer. Linen will never fail you in the summertime. For this dash of red I went with my Hextie. It’s a brand of ties that is made out of tile instead of fabric. They’re normally very costly but they often have great sales where they become affordable. I recommend getting one for all those who like to make a statement when you walk in the room

University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance:Grand Night for Singing 2017

This is from my first college performance. I’m a part of the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club founded in 1859 which is the 2nd oldest collegiate choir in the country. We performed at the schools annual vocal arts concert and we wore what is called “Coat and Tie”. It’s a tradition that goes back since the beginning of the club. Whenever we travel somewhere we wear a navy blue or black blazer with a white shirt, khakis, and a gold or blue tie. We normally perform in our tuxedos but since this was still early in the year we went with coat and tie. The Glee Club prides itself on not only musical excellence but excellence in appearance as well.

Men’s Glee Club Concert

These are our tuxedos for Men’s Glee Club. We wear these for our regular concerts throughout the year. These are what I like to call “the penguin suits”. You will see most professional organizations(choirs/orchestras/bands) wearing the tuxedo jackets with the coat tails. I always like to flap mine up just for fun😂It’s a very classy and elegant look that has lasted for centuries.

Freshman Voice Recital

“Omg Jack you don’t have on a hat!!!😦” was what I heard all night long😂This was from my first college recital a couple weeks ago. The freshman voice recital was an amazing event where I got to not only hear but meet more of my fellow classmates. Me being the only black vocal major, I knew I had to make an impact. My grey suit is a favorite of mine because it can be used for many different looks. I’ve noticed that red has become a pattern of mine for performance here😂But red is a very bright and popping color that gains attention and that’s one way to keep your audience involved. Wear colors that get attention. As soon as you step out on stage the audience is scanning you up and down trying to see what you’re made of. If they’re gonna stare at least make it worth their while

EnspiRED Art Experience

Since I’ve been on campus I have tried to get more involved in the black community and events that I have on campus. A couple of weeks ago a group called EnspiRED hosted their annual event where local artists showcase their talent. The person in charge of it went to my high school so I had to support. I knew this was more lax but I still had to represent my own style and one of my classic looks is blazer, collared shirt, and jeans. Burgundy has recently become a new favorite color of mine. It’s very relaxed for the autumn time. I had a great time at this event and I’ll be walking for them in their upcoming fashion show so stay tuned😏

Black Homecoming 2k17

This was my most recent performance. I sang at the black homecoming party. It’s homecoming so I had to show out. I decided to go with black and red because those were also the colors of the event. I wore my custom made red vest from my momma. She was an amazing seamstress who loved making clothes for me. The paisley print is always a stunner. It’s one of those classic patterns that never go out of style. My best piece of advice is to gain pieces that will never go out of style.

I hope you all enjoyed this post. Please share and subscribe!!
